Recently, when I spoke at Beltway Job Search Partners in the DC area, I had a job seeker hand me one of his business cards and I just had to share the experience with all of you.
I loved his business card. Loved it so much, that immediately after that break I interrupted my “regular program” and praised these cards in front of everyone. And why did I love his card so much?
1. His business card was pretty. Printed on excellent high-quality paper, in color, and used both sides of the card. Most job seekers don’t want to go to that expense (understandably) and so that made his really stand out at this event.
2. His business card SOLD HIM! In addition to the basic contact info, he had his brand and value-add benefits statement right on his card. Short, sweet, and to the point- it was probably less than ten words total. (I won’t post it here, because I want to preserve his uniqueness for him!) And let me tell you it packed a POWERFUL PUNCH!
Even as an experienced (and sometimes jaded) Career Coach, I was completely mesmerized by that short statement on his card. Beyond intrigued. I stopped everything I was doing, and felt compelled to talk to him about what he meant, what his goals were, and what he was looking for.
And then, because I was so impressed, I shared it with forty of my new closest “friends and colleagues!” And now, I’m blogging about it for the world to see!
Really, isn’t that the dream networking moment for every job seeker????
And to top it all off, he didn’t have to “act like a used car salesman.” He didn’t act pushy or come across in the least bit “desperate.” Quite the contrary.
He was able to let his value literally speak for itself. And standing there, he was confident and relaxed.
Trust me, it was an AWESOME networking moment.
Are you sold on the need for business cards yet?
What’s the Point of Business Cards?
And don’t just take my word for it. Here is an article by Andrew Brusnahan at Careerealism, “Do I really need a business card?”
My answer?
Yes. Yes, you most certainly do!
